Introduction
ABAP performance issues are one of the most common problems I see in real SAP projects.
Even experienced ABAP developers sometimes write code that works correctly but performs poorly in production systems.
In this article, I will share 10 common ABAP performance mistakes and explain how to avoid them using best practices.
All examples are based on real-life project experience.
1. Using SELECT * Instead of Specific Fields
❌ Problem
SELECT * FROM mara INTO TABLE lt_mara.
This reads all columns, even if you only need a few fields.
✅ Solution
SELECT matnr mtart
FROM mara
INTO TABLE lt_mara.
📌 Always select only the fields you really need.
2. SELECT Statements Inside Loops
❌ Problem
LOOP AT lt_vbak INTO ls_vbak.
SELECT SINGLE * FROM vbap INTO ls_vbap
WHERE vbeln = ls_vbak-vbeln.
ENDLOOP.
This causes multiple database calls.
✅ Solution
Use JOIN or FOR ALL ENTRIES.
SELECT a~vbeln b~posnr
FROM vbak AS a
INNER JOIN vbap AS b
ON a~vbeln = b~vbeln
INTO TABLE lt_data.
📌 One DB call is always better than many.
3. Wrong Usage of FOR ALL ENTRIES
❌ Problem
SELECT * FROM vbap
INTO TABLE lt_vbap
FOR ALL ENTRIES IN lt_vbak
WHERE vbeln = lt_vbak-vbeln.
If lt_vbak is empty, this selects all records.
✅ Solution
IF lt_vbak IS NOT INITIAL.
SELECT vbeln posnr
FROM vbap
INTO TABLE lt_vbap
FOR ALL ENTRIES IN lt_vbak
WHERE vbeln = lt_vbak-vbeln.
ENDIF.
📌 Always check the internal table before using FAE.
4. Using Standard Tables for Large Data
❌ Problem
DATA: lt_data TYPE STANDARD TABLE OF mara.
Standard tables are slow for READ operations.
✅ Solution
DATA: lt_data TYPE SORTED TABLE OF mara
WITH UNIQUE KEY matnr.
📌 Use:
- STANDARD → sequential access
- SORTED / HASHED → fast key access
5. Missing Proper Indexes in WHERE Conditions
❌ Problem
SELECT * FROM ztable
WHERE field1 = lv_val1
AND field2 = lv_val2.
If no index exists, DB scan happens.
✅ Solution
- Check SE11
- Create a secondary index
- Match index field order with WHERE clause
📌 Indexes are critical for large Z-tables.
6. Reading Internal Tables Without Binary Search
❌ Problem
READ TABLE lt_data INTO ls_data
WITH KEY matnr = lv_matnr.
This causes a linear search.
✅ Solution
SORT lt_data BY matnr.
READ TABLE lt_data INTO ls_data
WITH KEY matnr = lv_matnr
BINARY SEARCH.
📌 Or use SORTED / HASHED tables.
7. Not Using SELECT SINGLE Correctly
❌ Problem
SELECT * FROM t001
INTO ls_t001
WHERE bukrs = lv_bukrs.
✅ Solution
SELECT SINGLE * FROM t001
INTO ls_t001
WHERE bukrs = lv_bukrs.
📌 SELECT SINGLE is faster and clearer for single records.
8. Processing Data on Application Server Instead of Database
❌ Problem
SELECT * FROM vbak INTO TABLE lt_vbak.
DELETE lt_vbak WHERE erdat < lv_date.
✅ Solution
SELECT * FROM vbak
INTO TABLE lt_vbak
WHERE erdat >= lv_date.
📌 Let the database do the filtering.
9. Ignoring Code Inspector and ATC Results
Many performance issues are already detected by:
- SCI (Code Inspector)
- ATC (ABAP Test Cockpit)
📌 Always fix:
- SELECT in loops
- Unused fields
- Large internal tables
10. Not Measuring Performance (ST05 / SAT)
❌ Problem
Guessing where the problem is.
✅ Solution
Use:
- ST05 → SQL Trace
- SAT / SE30 → Runtime Analysis
📌 Measure first, optimize later.
